Hoop Hoop Hurray

A few years ago I never predicted that this little circle would play such an important role in my life. But it did. The hoop came into my life, with all its joy, love and flow! Now there is nothing else I want to do than spreading this happiness to everyone around. I do that by dancing, giving workshops and by offering The Hoop Book that I’ve created.

Sharing the joy, doubles the joy!
Will you come and hoop with me?

Choosing the right hoop

There are several factors to consider when picking out a hoop. The main consideration is… what type of hoop moves are you hoping to achieve with it? There are different ways to describe moves and they can be broken down into two main categories: on-body and off-body hooping. The right size also depends on your experience and body type. You have to experiment to find the size hoop that works for you. Here is a handy guide if you don’t know where to start!

Do you want to do on-body or off-body hooping?

Beginners start mostly on-body, which means part of the body is inside the hoop. Waist hooping, shoulder hooping and knee hooping are some examples of on-body hooping. Learning these things is easier with larger, thicker, heavier
hoops because they rotate more slowly than smaller ones. You have more time to build muscle memory and practice while taking things slowly. Some hoopers size down with their hoops as they become more experienced and want a faster on-body flow. Some hoopers choose to stay in their big hoops because they love how it feels. The choice is yours!

When you’re hooping off-body, you make patterns and moves using mainly your hands. You can also use your foot, elbow, butt or even your nose. It’s best to use smaller, thinner and lighter hoops for off-body hooping. The lightness helps with some of the speed and precision of off-body tricks.

Next problem to solve: what hoop size do you need? It’s important to start with the right size. If your hoop is too small and you are a beginner, the speed of the hoop might be too fast for you. The right size also depends on your body type. You have to experiment to find the size hoop that works for you. Here is a handy guide if you don’t know where to start! Measure the length from your toes to your belly button to find the right diameter for your first on-body hoop. Most adults start with a hoop diameter between 38“ and 43“ (95 – 110 cm), depending on their height and clothing size. Once you’ve been hooping for a while, you can downsize your hoop if you want. A smaller one is lighter and more flexible, which enables you to
do speedy off-body tricks. Try different sizes to find one that perfectly suits you!
